Closing the Gap Refresh

Australia’s Closing the Gap initiative began in 2008, focusing on seven national targets to improve the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

In 2018, the Federal Government facilitated a process of consultation to develop new Closing the Gap targets, and new ways of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Organisations and individuals were invited to make a submission around a number of focus questions. The END RHD CRE partnered with RHD Australia, providing input about the ongoing gap in health and life expectancy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians relative to non-Indigenous Australians.

Our submission focused on the need for critical prioritisation of health, highlighting rheumatic heart disease as an example of a preventable cause of cardiovascular inequality.
